How Should Boxing Gloves Fit

Buying boxing gloves can be very difficult task especially when you are new. They come in variety of sizes and weight and you should choose the one that fits you the best. Want to know how you can choose the bestsuited pair of boxing gloves? If your answer is yes, you have landed in the right place. In this article, we will shed light on some factors that are important to consider while selecting gloves.
Well, when picking the gloves, the first thing you need to consider is the size of gloves. It is important to ensure your comfort and minimize the risk of injury to your fingers, hands and wrists. The next important thing that you need to consider is the weight of gloves. Lighter gloves are usually used by the professionals while heavier gloves are used in sparring for non-professional boxers as they have more padding in them.

Basically, gloves are divided into three types on the basis of size i.e. small, medium and large. Listed below are the size divisions of gloves along with the uses.

8 oz – they are usually used for fighting and competition only as they are very small for adult hands.
10 oz – they are the smallest practical adult gloves and are ideal choice for hitting and heavy bags and pads. However, they are not used for sparring as they don’t have much padding. They are perfect for those who have smaller hands.
12 oz – these gloves are the best choice when used as training gloves.
14 oz – these gloves are perhaps the most common gloves. They are slightly lighter than 16 oz gloves and therefore, do not tire hands. They can still be used to spar because they have a lot of padding.
16 oz – they are the gym standard sparring gloves. They are perfect for those who have more weight but lighter weight fighters can also use 16 oz gloves.
18 oz – they are very rarely used by boxers because they are used by specifically largest men. They are heavy but excellently padded and therefore, can also be used by light weighted men for sparring.
When buying a glove, another important thing you need to consider is the type of the activity for

which you are going to use the gloves. Have a look on some guidelines:

  •       If you are doing martial arts, you should choose more flexible gloves as you will need to use your hands.
  •          If you are hitting heavy bags you should choose gloves with front thicker padding.
  •          Heavier gloves are suitable for you if you are training to get in the ring.
  •          If you are competing in the ring, you should go for lighter gloves.
  •          If you need gloves to hit speed bags and double end bags, you can buy bag gloves.
You should also consider your weight class while selecting the gloves’ size. Amateur or professional competition gloves are selected on the basis of weight and so are the training gloves.
Aforementioned guidelines are not a rule of thumb for all the gyms, coaches and fighters but a good standard to follow.
